Pt. 1 - The Waiting Is The Hardest Part...
It's Thursday October 21st and I am in Covington, Ky to meet up with Michelle VI48 and Jami VI26 and see
Mamasox perform at BosomBall 2010 at the Madison Theater. First off I want to thank MecVI3, Danny, Gwen and
everyone that tweeted and retweeted Crystal about being on the lookout for stalking VIs Okay, I arrived at the venue
around 1:00 and wandered behind the theater to see the roadies moving the equipment inside. I stood back for awhile
and just watched them scurry around but eventually went up to one of them and explained that I wasn't eyeing the sound
equipment, just waiting to meet Crystal. He was cool and kept me up with the schedule and what time Crystal would be
pulling in. Michelle VI48 called me around 1:35 and said they were on the road, I wanted to give them a heads up on
parking, it was pretty chaotic at first. The soundcheck party was scheduled for 4:00 so I had some waiting to do. Around
3:15 Carole from Cincy arrived, she knew all about the VI's and the first thing she said to me was "which one are you?"
lol She reads all the VI tweets every day. We talked for a few minutes about Crystal, Crystal and more Crystal who, by
the way, arrived about 3:40. I shouted to her and held up my red VI8 shirt and she smiled and chuckled. She talked to
us for a bit until the venue staff said they were really pushed for time. Mama said she'd see us later and I said we were
all going to be at the soundcheck party and she said "See you guys inside". One of the roadies showed us a shortcut to
the front of the venue and when we got there a small crowd was beginning to build. After a little wait, they opened up and
we wandered inside and in just a few minutes they introduced Crystal and said there would be a Q&A session between
songs...to be cont'd
Pt. 2 - A Face In The Crowd...
When I reached the stage, Carole from Cincy was asking Crystal to see her new tats and her ring and of course
Mama was as gracious as always. Crystal greeted the audience and then she opened with the G-rated version of
Farmer's Daughter and it was excellent, when she finished the questions began. Her cousin Katy Bowersox brought
her some gifts, one of which was the Bowersox family newsletter which Crystal said her grandfather started. A lady
behind me asked a question about the meaning behind Cry No More (which Crystal said it was about a breakup and how
one minute everything's fine then the next minute everything goes wrong) and I turned around and recognized her right
away, it was MichelleVI48 along with Jami VI26, they had made crazy time, driving down from Toledo. I leaned over to
Jami and said "see I told you I would freeze up" see, I told her awhile back that if I got to meet Crystal that I would
probably freeze up and forget what to ask her Crystal then sang Finally Got It Right, also excellent, and more
questions ensued. Jami asked her what it was like to finally be able to sing her originals and Crystal said "Relief" and it
was so great to play with Frankie again and one lady asked her how many songs she has written, CB initially said 120
but said 60 or so solid, fully written songs. She then performed a cover of Ray LaMontagne's Jolene, once again
excellent and finished with Riding With The Radio, also excellent...I know I am being a bit redundent but it's not like I am
going to say she was just good lol The soundcheck party ended with a picture/autograph session, it was a bit rushed,
we got our Tshirts autographed and Michelle and Jami got their laminates signed, I forgot to get mine signed and they
were rushing us through and Jami just got CB on hers (Crystal corrected that later). We waited for a few minutes and
they walked Crystal out and she said she'd see us in a bit but the staff told us that we had to leave. We left to grab a
bite to eat at The Backstage Tavern and wait for the show. It was getting closer to showtime so I went to charge my
phone and Carole from Cincy held our place in line. By the time I got back, the lines were getting very long, thank God
for Carole Let the show begin...
Pt. 3 - Restless...
When they opened the doors, Michelle and Jami went to the front of the stage,Carole went with her friend upstairs
while I borrowed an outlet to try to charge my phone a little more. After a few minutes, I gave up on phone-charging and
made my way to the front. There were 5 performers this evening and 3 of them were before Mama, I was getting a bit
restless thinking of the long wait for her set. Kristen Key opened the show, she was good, cute but not really my cup of
tea. The weird thing about her set was that she didn't have a drummer, per se, her "percussionist" sat on a...well, I
guess you would call it a beatbox that he would slap, it was strange but it worked. Next up was Angel Taylor, who's set
was so calm and quiet, it was kind of hard to hear her above the crowd talking during her performance. I was feeling bad
for her but she was a trooper and pushed through it. Next was VV Brown and I was expecting a ballady R 'n B type set
but that couldn't be farther from the truth. She rocked and had amazing stage presence. Jami barely noticed her due to
the fact that her eyes were locked on the guitarist It was an excellent and energetic set but a strange lead in to
Crystal due to the complete opposite styles. We were standing in front of the aforementioned guitarist and it was loud so
I needed a minute to get my hearing back in my left ear Next up...Mamasox.
Pt. 4 - Too Good To Be True...
I had personally waited for what seemed like years (okay, more like months) to see Crystal do her own thing,
completely Idol-free so I was literally shaking with anticipation. If I get the song order mixed up at all, please forgive me
because I was just mesmerized by her. Of course, the announcer had to ask the question to crowd "Who here watches
Americal Idol"...urrrgh. The Mamasox (rocking the flannel shirt) and Frankie walked out and she greeted the crowd, me
and Michelle VI48 held up my VI banner and Crystal pointed and smiled at us. She opened with Riding With The Radio
and after the first verse/chorus I realized I had forgot to call MecVI3 for her to listen in. After fumbling with my phone a
bit, I got her on the phone and the show was on. Mama then played Farmer's Daughter which. after hearing the original
millions of times, sound even more incredible with CBs and Frankie's harmonies...I got chills. She chatted a bit with the
crowd, saying "feel free to start a mosh pit" lol (this comment would eventually become more meaningful a little later on)
lol then she broke into On The Run, sounded excellent and then someone yelled out Holy Toledo and Crystal said, it's
coming. I begged and begged Her and Frankie to play Calm but it was to no avail. Ok, this is where my memory gets
really fuzzy on the order of things but I believe that the next song was Me and Bobby McGee (excellent) and then Holy
Toledo (which she said "you will be happy to know that it made the album). She changed up the lyrics a bit and it really
worked and words cannot explain how good she sounds live..except maybe awe-inspiring. She then announced the next
song as one that even the fans that think they have heard all her songs, may not have heard called Numb. The song was
very, very good, dark and haunting. At this point she said that she and Frankie do not use setlists so they were
discussing the next song and Crystal was saying "Crazy" but after a minute of debating she announced Speak Now. It
was excellent (redundant, I know) at one point, MichelleVI48 yelled out Patience and Crystal looked bumfuzzled and
said "whoa, that's an old one" lol She closed the set with a kickass version of Kiss Ya and even though some of the
crowd was a bit chatty during the performance she got a very good response overall. The set was awesome and I can't
wait to see a full 2 hr set, and if tonight was any indication, that would be completely jaw dropping...to be cont'd
Pt. 5 - Stop Jamming Me...
I got to say, I have been to a hundred or more metal shows but Sara Bareilles music can apparently ignite a moshpit
too (albeit a wimpy one) lol Her fans started pushing to the front and a few scuffles ensued even before she started.
There wasn't any crowd control and it started to get a bit crazy once she started into Vegas. During the second song
Michelle, Jami and I decided to make a break for the door but it was much more difficult than we anticipated. The place
was packed and no one wanted to move and let us out. We just went for it and made our way outside, it was nice to
breathe again. We were going to get a bite to eat and relax and reflect when we decided to go to the back of the theater.
We rounded the building and there was Mama just hanging out, she saw us and said "Hey, guys" and we hung out for a
good while. She signed MecVI3s JDRF tshirt and my banner and posed for pics with all of us. She was too cool for
words, just talked about her music, her life and everything else. Michelle told her about the crowd issues during Sara's
set and I told her she got it started with the whole mosh pit comment, she laughed At one point, I asked her if I called
Mec if she cared to say hi and she said she would. She mentioned that she usually doesn't do the improv "here...talk"
thing because her Mom used to do that to her all the time and she hated that lol but I got Mec on the phone and Crystal
just said hi and chatted with her for a few minutes, it was cool and i told CB that she just made Mec's life lol I then told
her about my "serenade" dream and she laughed and said she read about it She said that Brian always sings
cheesy versions of her songs to her, just messing with her and he keeps her laughing. I chose not to humiliate myself
but I will serenade her sometime in the future you could see that she is 100% happy with her life now and tha smile
was a great thing to see. She said she and Frankie were heading into Cincy to Molly Malone's to hang out with some old
friends and asked us to drop by later. We were very tempted but we all had a long drive home (we're lame I know but I
think we all were second guessing that decision from the moment we left) and she understood and thanked us for
coming. We went to went to get some food and decompress and then head home. The 75 south onramp was being
worked on or something so I took a detour following Michelle and Jami (or so I thought) and after about 30+ minutes of
driving in the boondocks I called Michelle and said we missed the turnoff. She said if I was behind her then I was going
north and I was going the wrong way. I told her I was flashing my headlight and asked if she seen it, she said she saw
something. In the meantime, the car in front of me pulls off the road, I pull behind it and then I realize it's not Michelle's
car. I had went and hour or more offcourse thinking she knew the way out lol I spun out of the driveway and raced back
and found the interstate and had almost 4 hours to reflect on an AMAZING night. I made it home safe and sound around
5am, dazed and confused ahhh...Good Times!
