LIMA — For 30 years, Dennis Baker has volunteered to help ensure Square Fair goes off without a hitch. This year, he stepped up as president to keep the two-day downtown festival going. Howewver, Baker insists it’s a one and done scenario.
As he watched workers making the finishing touches to the stage and audio equipment Friday afternoon in Town Square, Baker said he will not reprise the lead role next year.
“I think if I wouldn’t have, I don’t know if there would have been somebody that would have done it. You’ve got to have somebody that’s willing to step up for several months, drop everything and do it,” Baker said. “People have got lives, they’ve got work, they’ve got responsibilities. It takes a lot of time to run this thing.”
For this year’s two-day affair, Baker has helped line up children’s activities, numerous food and craft vendors and two nights of music, including headliners Crystal Bowersox on Friday and Brownsville Station on Saturday.
Bowersox, the American Idol runner-up from the Fox television show’s ninth season, was serenaded with “Happy Birthday” shortly after she began performing in honor of the singer-songwriter’s 27th birthday, which is today.
“Ah, thank you,” Bowersox replied.
Baker said he has high expectations for attendance at this year’s Square Fair.
“This could be one of the biggest Fridays that we’ve ever done next to Charlie Daniels. Brownsville Station will do exceptionally well,” Baker said. “We’re going to have a fantastic weekend. There’s no doubt about it. This could be one of the biggest weekends we’ve ever had.”
As far as the lineup goes, Baker said he’s pumped.
“I’m absolutely ecstatic about Brownsville Station. It’s been three years putting the band back together and finally it’s coming to reality,” Baker said. “They’re going to be filming a live DVD that they’re going to use with their new CD. I ‘m real excited about that.
“Crystal is a great artist, a fantastic songwriter. She’s great.”
